Insider Tips for Tenerife Travellers

0

The difficulty with travelling to a destination for the first time is knowing where all the hidden gems are and where the locals go. If only you had all the insider information on your holiday destination in a bite-size format beforehand…

Luxury holidays specialist, Sovereign.com has just launched the second in a series of Insider Destination Guides which provides just this information.

Using tips from locals, The Insider’s Guide to Tenerife inspires visitors to try new things, explaining local cuisine and highlighting Tenerife’s best kept secrets from authentic, local restaurants to the most beautiful, secluded beaches.

Produced in a PDF format the guide is available to download and print for free from the Tenerife holidays page on the Sovereign website. To give you an idea of the tips and advice available in the guide, here are a few extracts we’d recommend reading if you’re planning a Tenerife holiday:

Sand, Sea & Surf

The volcanic nature of the island means the land has few white, natural beaches. Those that do exist are characterised by black sand created from the island’s volcanic rocks and are widely known for their beauty.

  • For sand & surfing– El Médano Beach is the longest, natural sandy beach in Tenerife and there are lots of good fish restaurants here due to the village’s fishing heritage. Good winds and calm waters make the beach ideal for windsurfing novices.
  • Perfect for privacy -Playa de Los Gigantes,or ‘The Cliffs of the Giants’, is located on the western coast of Tenerife and is home to a busy yacht marina.  Nearby there is a very small sandy beach that doesn’t get too crowded and is perfect if you want some privacy.

Eat Local

Canary Island cuisine mixes traditional Spanish cooking with African and Latin American influences. The usual international dishes are available, but to experience real local cuisine opt for the following dishes:

·         Cazuela de Pescado – Fresh fish casserole with potatoes, onions, tomatoes and peppers

·         Truchas de batata– Puff pastry filled with sweet yams, almonds and cinnamon

·         Pulpo Gallego– Octopus boiled and sprinkled with paprika served hot, or served cold with an onion and pepper salad

Family Adventures

The Loro Parque is a Spanish zoo located on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz and is a perfect day out for the whole family. With more than 300 species of parrot it has the largest, most diverse parrot collection in the world. You can also see the gorillas, chimpanzees, tigers, jaguars, flamingos, alligators and tortoises. Thrill-seekers will enjoy the aquarium with shark tunnel and the world’s largest penguinarium that mimics the Antarctic climate with 12 tons of (real) snow falling a day! Tickets can be purchased at the gate for €32 for adults and €12 for children.

Tip:Buy tickets in advance online and save €5 off each ticket.

Viva la Fiesta

From music and food festivals to carnivals and religious celebrations there are plenty of events to enjoy if you’re visiting Tenerife. There are two spectacular events coming up soon, the Santa Cruz Music Festival and the Carnival of Santa Cruz.

·         Between January 7th and February 14th 2011 Tenerife will host the 27th Canary Islands’ Music Festival. The festival is an annual event which brings some of the world’s best musicians and orchestras to the island and attracts classical music lovers from afar.

·         From February 1st to the 27th 2011 it is the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tenerife’s carnival is considered the best after Rio de Janeiro and all the islanders take part in fiesta revelry. The port area of Santa Cruz is where most of the action is, bursting with salsa dancing, music and carnival processions for a crazy 27 days.

Tip:Plan ahead and get tickets early as this event is very popular and will sell out.

Lafayette Welcomes Raul Malo

0

The Acadiana Center for the Arts is proud to bring Cuban-American roots music sensation Raul Malo to the James Devin Moncus Theater stage Saturday, February 4 at 8:00 p.m. Raul Malo brings his chart-topping new album Sinners & Saints to a one-night-only show at AcA on his way from Texas to the East Coast and Europe.

Malo is a musical chameleon, moving fluidly from Alt-Country to Blues, Jazz and Latin, connecting all through great vintage rock and roll. A master at infusing his songwriting with sonic ingenuity and emotional sincerity, Malo’s performances are abundant with surprising twists, from the twang of a country guitar to the melancholy of a trumpet and the punctuations of a Mexican accordion.

The founder of alt-Country band The Mavericks and of Latin All-Star group Los Super Seven, Malo has over the years collaborated with a who’s who in music, from Willie Nelson to Emmylou Harris, Los Lobos to Susanna Baca, Joe Ely to Rick Trevino.

Backed by a five-piece band and endowed with a phenomenal vocal range, Raul Malo is one of the great independent voices in music today. Hearing this extraordinary musician in the acoustically pure environment of AcA’s 300-seat James D. Moncus Theater will be a memorable experience.

Entertainment Weekly stated, “Malo is one of those rare singers who transcend the mundane with the sheer operatic sweep of his marvelous instrument. He’s among the last of a breed: a country stylist with finesse and brawn in equal measure, turning his laments into bittersweet valentines.”

Ticket prices are $20 for AcA members, $25 for non-members in advance, $25 for members and $30 for non-members at the door.

Tickets are available online at AcadianaCenterfortheArts.org, by phone at 337.233.7060 or visiting our Box Office at 101 W. Vermilion St., Lafayette. Box Office hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 – 5 p.m.

New Private Nile River Cruises from Abercrombie & Kent

0

I just got word about a new Nile River cruise that actually hearkens back to the days when dahabiehs — lanteen-rigged sailboats — were the main method of transportation on this waterway. These sail-powered vessels were used extensively up until the 19th century when steamships made their debut in the area. The popularity of dahabiehs waned as they were slower than steamships and so fell out of favor with many. Today, these sailing ships have been retrofitted for high-end travel up and down the Nile.

Abercrombie & Kent is now offering private travel aboard the new luxury dahabieh, Zein Nile Chateau. This ship is part of A&K’s Tailor Made Private Travel program. These intimate boats are perfect for small groups. And, since dahabiehs are smaller and more agile than traditional Nile River boats, they can visit more areas than their competitors.

Zein Nile Chateau was purpose-built for the luxury market with two expansive suites and four staterooms. Unlike other dahabiehs, the cabins on this sailboat are air-conditioned. Public areas include the dining room with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, cigar lounge, library, sun deck, oasis pool, and outdoor lounge designed for stargazing.

Travelers may charter Zein Nile Chateau. Seven-night itineraries start at $29,600 for up to 12 people. An experienced Egyptologist travels with all Abercrombie & Kent Nile River tours and with just 12 travelers on this ship, you’re sure to enjoy a personalized journey down the Nile.

Uniworld Dry Docks River Tosca & Replaces Her with the Miriam on Egypt’s Nile River

If you’ve been planning a trip to Egypt, you’ve probably read a lot about the new River Tosca ship that Uniworld sails on the Nile River.

A Message from the President & CEO of Uniworld

Dear Valued Uniworld Travelers,

There has been quite a bit of information written about the River Tosca since it launched a couple of months ago, and I wanted to take this opportunity to personally give you an update on where things stand.

Over the last several years, we have seen a growing interest in Egypt, which is a glorious destination. As a company, we saw the need and opportunity to provide travelers to Egypt with a Nile River cruise ship that would be of a similar high standard as our ships in Europe. Uniworld commissioned the River Tosca with the goal that it would be one of the most luxurious ships to sail the Nile.

Unfortunately, we experienced some unexpected challenges in introducing the River Tosca and we are not happy with the current quality of workmanship finishes in several areas of the ship. The most obvious examples are the floors in the staterooms, main stairwell and corridors which were damaged and scratched during the installation; the mosaic tiles in the restaurant; and the paint and woodwork in the staterooms. We have therefore made the decision to dry dock the ship for seven weeks to correct the current deficiencies. The ship will therefore be out of service between February 1, 2010 and March 19, 2010.

We do have an alternative ship, the Miriam, which we will use while the River Tosca is dry docked. Uniworld has successfully used the Miriam prior to introducing the River Tosca and the ship is a good substitute. The crew from the River Tosca – including the Hotel Manager, Executive Chef, and Executive Housekeeper, all Uniworld employees from our European operation, will be onboard the Miriam. We will also bring onto the Miriam some of the special amenities currently available on the River Tosca, such as bed linens, robes, slippers, and bath products. We will be offering a compensation package to those clients sailing on the Miriam as we understand that some of our guests will be disappointed with the ship change; however, we will work very hard to ensure they still have a wonderful vacation in Egypt.

We are also going to proactively reach out to our guests who are traveling prior to February 1 to update them on the status of the River Tosca.

This was a very difficult decision because we know that this will have an impact on our valued guests – some who have chosen to travel with Uniworld because they wanted to experience the new River Tosca. It is also a difficult decision because, even with the current deficiencies of the ship, the overall feedback we have been receiving from guests who have already traveled on the River Tosca is very positive. The Cairo program, the Tour Managers, the excursions, the food, and the service onboard the ship have all been very well received. And of course the destination itself is fabulous. It is however the right decision for us to make.

Uniworld has built our very good reputation today on being a very reliable river cruise operator and we are committed to providing our guests with a fantastic vacation experience and value – in every region where we operate. When we re-launch the River Tosca in March, we are confident that we will achieve this commitment in Egypt.

After several years of successfully launching ships in Europe, the experience in Egypt has been a humbling one for me and the entire Uniworld team. I want to personally apologize to any of our guests who we may have let down and please know that we are working hard to achieve our stated goal of operating a luxury product in Egypt.

Kind regards,
