Stansted Strike Action Called Off

0
Stansted Airport

The threatened strike action by Stansed Airport baggage handlers’ over the busy Easter weekend has been called off.

Last week baggage handlers voted to take strike action in a dispute over new shift patterns would potentially cost workers upto £1000 a year in lost earnings.
Thankfully, unions have announced that the proposed Stansted strike action will be suspended after talks led to Stansted Airport issuing the following statement on it’s website.
“Swissport and the joint trade unions GMB and Unite have announced that the proposed strike action by baggage handlers planned for the Easter weekend has been called off,”

The two unions and Swissport said in a joint statement: “We are pleased passengers and families travelling over the Easter weekend will no longer face potential disruption.

“We will continue our talks in an attempt to reach a joint consensus that ensures we understand our commercial challenges and balance the need for the work life balance of our employees.”

Swissport, who employ around 150 people to handle baggage for several airlines including Ryanair, Thomsonfly and Thomas Cook, said a drop in flights at Stansted had significantly reduced its revenues, and the introduction of new working patterns were needed to cut costs. Richard Prince, general manager of Swissport Stansted, said the changes meant job losses could be avoided.

3 Month Summer School Holidays

0

If you think that you pay too much during the School Holidays to take your family away, and have been tempted to ‘extend’ the children’s summer break by either finishing the school term a bit early or not sending the children back when the autumn term begins, taking advantage of the cheaper prices available from travel companies, outside of peak times, then think again.

Under new proposals announced by the Education Secretary, Michael Grove, the school calendar could be in for a major shake up, with summer school holidays becoming more ‘flexible’ for academies and free schools.
The majority of state schools in the UK take a 6 week summer break from the end of July to the beginning of September for school holidays. The new calendar would mean that schools could have this summer holiday period reduced to 4 weeks, that could be taken at any time between the beginning of July to the end of September.

Some reports, and thinking behind this, have suggested that it could mean the end to over inflated pricing within the new school holidays period by holiday companies. However, there are stronger indications that it could mean prices would remain high throughout the whole of the 3 month flexible school holidays break; also allowing the areas either side of the holidays mid June to mid October, the ‘shoulders’, to be increased slightly as they are are with the the traditional school holidays calendar as it presently is. It could also mean that October pricing remains higher, due to Half Term breaks, again, another high priced school holiday period, taking place during the last week of October.

There are to be 1,100 new academies by next year with the government hoping 100 free schools will be established by 2012. Under powers granted last year, these schools are allowed to set their own term dates and alter the school timetable.

As well as switching from three to six terms a year, schools are allowed lengthen their hours to last from 8am to 8pm and those schools with a large number of pupils may open 51 weeks of the year.

Princess Cruises Change Smoking Policy

0

Princess Cruises has announced that from 15th January 2012, smoking will not be permitted in any of it’s cabins or balconies.
The new policy is reflective of changing Princess Cruises customer preferences and the global change in smoking tolerance — from North America to Europe — to further restrict areas where smoking is allowed, according to the line.

“Our consumer studies now show that smokers are a small minority of our passengers, and that the large majority of passengers value having their primary living space onboard smoke-free,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president.

Swartz added that balconies are included in the new policy because they are a hallmark feature of Princess ships, and the line believes it’s important to keep that peaceful space clear of smoke.

Smoking will still be permitted in certain areas of the ship, and in special venues to accommodate smokers. Smoking will continue to be allowed in the Churchill’s cigar lounge, a section of the disco and casino, and a portion of the open decks.

Princess Cruises operates all over the world offering a range of ships from large, but still offering a feeling of escapisum, to smaller ships with a more intimate feel. Experience a relaxed, rejuvenating retreat at sea, or unwind in the comfortable elegance of a Princess Cruises ship. Whether you’re having cocktails with friends or decide to curl up under a warm fleece blanket enjoying scenic cruising, Princess Cruises ships are upscale but never stuffy, designed for you to escape completely. Destinations range from the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska to exotic destinations around the globe, Princess offers over 330 ports of call on more than 130 itineraries.

Booked passengers are being notified of the new policy, which is also being communicated widely throughout the line’s informational materials.

46th Annual Thoroughbred Horse Raising Season Gets Underway

Opelousas, LA- With the addition of a hotel and even center, Evangeline Downs Racetrack, Casino, and Hotel has developed into an entertainment hot spot in Southwest Louisiana. Anchored by a state of the art facility, which includes a one-mile oval dirt track and a 7-furlong turf track, the racing program has become known as the “home of the biggest fields>” Races have averaged slightly more than 10 runners per race over the past four spring and summer thoroughbred racing seasons, a distinction that only Evangeline Downs can claim.

The 89-day thoroughbred racing season gets underway April 6th, and runs through Labor Day, September 5. Post time Wednesday through Saturday is at 5:40 p.m. with a special Labor Day post of 3:05 p.m.

Highlighting the lucrative stakes schedule is Louisiana Showcase Night, a stakes-only program restricted to horses bred in Louisiana featuring six races worth a minimum of $100,000 and totaling 10 events worth almost $1 million. Louisiana leads the nation with its breeding incentive program funded largely though the slots at the racetrack program. The casino at Evangeline Downs has over 1400 slot machines generating revenue for purses and breeding incentive programs.

Other marquee events during the season will include the Evangeline Mile and the Lafayette Stakes. The “Mile”, the premier event for older horses, will offer a purse of $125,000, up $25,000 from 2010 and be run on August 13th, while the Lafayette Stakes for Two-year-olds will be contested on its usual spot, Labor Day, September 5th. The Lafayette this year will be run on the Turf course for the first time and at the distance of one mile.

In addition to the surface and distance change, the Lafayette Stakes will feature a $100,000 purse, an increase of $50,000 from last year. More than $1.8 million will be distributed over the 25 black-type events offered in addition to overnight purses of approximately $170,000 a night, the same level offered in 2010.

“We continue to attract a solid group of horses and horsemen with our strong overnight and takes schedules,” says Steve Darbonne, director of racing operations. “Both the backstretch and the nearby training center are at near capacity and the morning workout lists are very long and we hope to once again offer our fans the full fields and exciting brand of racing they have come to expect from Evangeline Downs.”
