KMAC Museum is opening an exhibition featuring works by one of the most dynamic Spanish painters and sculptors, who is considered one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. “Picasso: From Antibes to Louisville” opens on Dec. 14.

The exhibition features more than 50 works by Pablo Picasso, including paintings, drawings, lithographs and ceramics that represent the artist from 1931 through 1956. In addition, 20 photographs by Michel Sima documenting the artist’s creative process will also be on display. These works are part of the collection of the Musée Picasso in Antibes, France, and the exhibition is one that has never before been seen outside of Europe.

It will be up for viewing at KMAC, located on Louisville Kentucky’s historic Main Street, through March 22, 2020.

In addition to Picasso, the museum is also opening another exhibition by artist Summer Wheat. Her compositions are built on aluminum mesh screens using pastry bags to push the paint through the mesh crosshairs and create a surface that’s like a deftly woven tapestry.

Wheat’s allegorical still-life paintings show female figures as powerful warriors, healers, explorers, and makers of their own world. It’s on display through April 5, 2020.

“KMAC’s success in putting on these exhibitions is also Louisville’s success,” says Aldy Milliken, Executive Director. “The city has a vibrant and growing arts scene that can attract world-class talent, and KMAC is proud to be part of it.”

Admission to the museum – which will include both exhibitions – is $9 for adults and $6 for seniors (65+) and members of the military. Free for children 18 and under and students with valid ID.

Gorilla trekking is one of the key reasons why thousands of tourists visit Rwanda or Uganda because it is an exceptional activity conducted within only three countries of the World that include Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In most cases, the issue of safety and security as far as gorilla trekking is concerned has been a subject of debate for tourists across the globe. But did you know that a face to face encounter with the mountain gorillas is safer than encountering any other wildlife species? Yeah that’s the fact and on your next gorilla safari, do not be worried of the experience;

Safety of Countries

When it comes to security of the countries, Rwanda and Uganda are very safe for tourists to visit. Most tourists are always scared of guerillas and not gorillas, which is why the Governments of these two countries are doing the best to make sure that tourists are safe. When venturing into the jungles, tourists track gorillas in the company of armed rangers and an experienced tour guide.

The Actual Gorilla Visit

When it comes to interaction with the mountain gorillas, it is totally safe because these creatures are very gentle and not aggressive as they are portrayed. Before tourists are allowed to go on gorilla treks, these great apes undergo a habituation process for over three years to make sure that they get used to human presence. Tourists are only allowed to track habituated gorilla families that are now used to the presence of humans hence are not dangerous to tourists who visit the Parks to track them. Habituation of the mountain gorillas usually takes 2-3 years then mock trials are conducted before they are fully tracked by tourists.

Gorillas are very peaceful creatures! If you have ever watched the King Kong movie, you will see how these creatures are portrayed which is contrary to what they are. They are very friendly until provoked, and will respond by beating their chest. However, the fact that they are wild animals, is should not be ignored that they can turn aggressive and hence to ensure safety and security, several rules and regulations (guidelines)-with dos and don’ts exist to ensure safety of the tourists and tourists as well.

Protective Set Guidelines

Before a tourist is allowed to enter the National park for gorilla trekking to search for the Mountain gorillas, he or she has to first attend a pre-tracking briefing at the park Headquarters–to understand what to do or not to do during gorilla trekking. What every tourist needs to understand is that the critically endangered mountain gorillas are not aggressive and dangerous as long as they are relaxed and not disturbed.

You will be guided by Rangers

The park rangers are very clear and critical on the issue of distance (7 meters away from the Mountain gorillas) which is the accepted distance for tourists when observing the Mountain gorillas. If the mountain gorillas come closer, do not run away but extend away slowly or sit until these animals move away from you.

Pay Respect to Your Hosts

Like in human behavior it is important to respect the homes of the hosts. You are just a visitor not the owner of the home. Tourists are not allowed to eat or drink in the presence of the Mountain gorilla family. You can eat when you are not in the presence of these creatures. Tourists are advised to avoid staring directly into the eyes of the Mountain gorillas because these animals can perceive it as a provocation and hostility. In case they charge, you look away which shows submission

Speak quietly when tracking or when with the mountain gorillas because noise startles them and avoid making fast and sudden moves because it is perceived as a threat to these exceptional primate species.

Also, avoid using flash cameras when taking photographs because it also scares them and can make them to charge. These stringent rules and regulations (guidelines) are supposed to be followed by every tourist/gorilla trekker with non exception of everyone. In case the rules and regulations are followed to book, there is no way that the Mountain gorillas-known to be Gentle Giants would become aggressive to anyone.

In conclusion

Mountain gorillas are safe to be tracked within Rwanda and Uganda because they have undergone 2-3 years’ habituation to make them used to the presence of humans and there are no guerillas due to the increased security around the National parks and the countries in general.

Exploring The Caribbean In Style

Warner Hotel

Time has flown so quickly since disembarking from my Caribbean cruise on the Marella Celebration. For me, this was the perfect holiday choice: that’s because the vessel is relatively small by today’s standards, carrying approximately 1300 passengers. This makes it very easy to get around the ship without getting lost (as I usually do).

A friendly atmosphere is prevalent throughout the ship, due to the fantastic crew and repeat passengers who return time and time again; some have several of their next adventures booked whilst enjoying the current one. Over the years, I’ve sailed the seven seas with many different cruise lines, including 6-star liners, but have never felt more comfortable than I did on the Marella Celebration.

Once arrived on board, my luggage was sharply delivered to my cabin at a lightning bolt speed, which gave me time to settle in and unpack before my evening meal and the general emergency drill: an international safety regulation for every passenger on board – sorry, there’s no getting out of it. Of course, a pre-dinner cocktail was a great welcome bonus after a fairly long journey!

Morning has broken, and I headed straight for the main restaurant. As much as some are drawn to the buffet, I love the whole experience of being greeted by my waiter, choosing from the menu and then having my breakfast freshly cooked whilst enjoying copious amounts of tea and coffee of course.

On sea days, you can fill your time with learning to dance, take a guided tour of the ship, test your knowledge in a quiz, try your hand at soft archery, play crazy golf or table tennis or just relax on a sunbed with a good book. And once you’ve finished your current book, take it to the library and swap it for another – simple as that. Beam at the many demonstrations such as ice carving, beauty and wellness, get pampered in the spa or even learn to make an animal out of a towel.

The majority of my downtime was spent slurping speciality coffees at the Coffee Port, sipping cocktails with the accompanying background of live music, or taking the time out for some retail therapy at the Broad Street Shops where you can purchase a wide range of duty-free goods at fairly reasonable prices. Planning your country-ticking days ahead, you can collate information on all the ports of call by visiting Destination Services or even book an excursion directly with them.

Lunch is served in the Meridian Restaurant, Lido Restaurant and Terrace Grill: choose which one depending on if you want waiter service, buffet style or light bites. As the night draws in, you can choose whether to opt for a four-course meal at the Meridian (with a fresh menu daily) or treat yourself to a gastronomy wonder at one of three speciality restaurants where you’ll need to pay a small supplement fee – it’s best to book your table in advance. The Kora La serves an Asian fusion menu while the Hot Stone is a hotspot where you’ll cook your steak, lobster tail and much more on your own hot lava stone. Mistrals, a personal favourite for me, allows you to create your own Land and Sea inspired menu and even be serenaded at your table, as I was.

There was no greater joy than retiring to the Broadway Show Lounge for a different themed production every night: such as Moulin Rouge which featured a 6-minute Can-can piece – I was exhausted just watching! As if the crew doesn’t work hard enough, they spent the little free time they have entertaining us with their very own ‘Cruise Show’, and to top it all off, a Comedian was flown in especially, leaving us all in absolute hysterics. Eleven o’clock struck and I concluded my evening in Liberties, the hot on board Nightclub, followed by a final midnight splash at the Casino.

The passengers onboard the Marella Celebration are like family to the ship, they come back time and time again: a testament to a truly spectacular cruise.

Exploring The AIDA Prima In Under 4 Hours!

0

AIDA Cruises are a German cruise line founded in the 1960’s with onboard facilities directly aimed to appeal to a younger customer.

Most recently, launching their newest ship the AIDAprima; the first in a new class of technologically and environmentally-friendly based ships. This 124,000 ton floating Behemoth carries approximately 3,300 passengers with 17 decks. These house 15 dining options, 14 cafés and bars, a spa and fitness area, water slides and even its own lazy river.
Through the vine, I had heard that the AIDAprima was sailing into Southampton and luckily enough, I was contacted to join her for the day.

Embarkation

As expected, I was boarding at my most used terminal, the Ocean Cruise Terminal. Much to my surprise, only around thirty passengers actually ventured off the ship. Of course, when arriving at 10 o’clock this is not what you expect. Nonetheless, this did mean our embarkation was much quicker.

Dining

Following my tour of the AIDAprima, we were given a lunch at the onboard buffet restaurant. The Markt Restaurant. Immediately what stood out is just how much meat the German’s consume. Just from estimation alone, I would guess around 80% of the cuisine was either meat or fish. Sadly for my mum (who is a Vegetarian), this is not an ideal option. Thus, if you’re a Vegetarian, I strongly advise organizing your dietary requirements with the cruise line beforehand. One element that shocked me was that all Wine and Beer’s are included with your cruise fare in the buffet restaurants.

Aside from the Markt Restaurant, the AIDAprima features five additional buffet restaurants. This is a new venture for most mainstream cruise lines, however, our guide explained this replaces the “main dining room”. On the plus side, this does mean there’s no waiting around for your food and you will have complete flexible dining. These five buffet restaurants included Italian, Bella Donna Restaurant. Global cuisine themed Weite Welt Restaurant. For younger children, the Fuego Restaurant and of course the Markt Restaurant. Yet, I do admit, my personal favorite would have to be the Asian themed East Restaurant.

However, please don’t get those buffet restaurants confused with being specialty restaurants. Wherever your tastes buds are lingering, the AIDAprima features four à la carte restaurants and three specialty restaurants. Serving the finest French cuisine, the AIDAprima features an onboard French brasserie. The French Kiss. Additionally, if Venetian cuisine is more suited to you; The Casa Nova Restaurant offers just that. The final specialty restaurant being the Brauhaus (my dad’s favorite), serving German dishes. In fact, it even serves Beer straight from the onboard Brewery. As for the four à la carte restaurants, serving some of the best steaks at sea; sits the Buffalo Steak House. Or if you’ve ever dreamed of taking a cookery class at sea, you can do this at the Kochstudio. However, if you are brave enough to dare Sushi, you may be suited to the Sushi Bar.

But what about those times where you’re just lazing by the pool in the mood for a small bite? There are three bars onboard for small bites. These include the Sharfe Ecke, the Pier 3 Market (for croissants and cakes) and the Tapas Bar.

Entertainment

Upon arrival to the ship one element that both intrigued and surprised me was the theatre. Or Theatrium as it’s called. What makes this area so intriguing, is that it actually doubles as an atrium. During the day, it’s a place where you can meet up with friends grab a drink and relax. However, when the sun goes down, it’s transformed into an acrobatic adventure.

Onboard Activities

If suffering from a case of Affluenza, the AIDAprima features a Plaza for all your shopping requirements. Spread over two decks, the Plaza features many shops, bars, a salon and even a Magnum Pleasure Store. The Magnum Pleasure Store allows customers to customise their magnum with a choice a topping and chocolate. Thus, creating your own personal Magnum ice cream bar. From first-hand experience, I can state the personalized creation that I constructed was absolutely delicious!

After indulging in a magnum, you may want to burn off those calories, this is never a problem on the AIDAprima! Despite cruise ships sometimes gaining a reputation for making you pile on the pounds, the AIDAprima is centered around fitness and exercise.

Though after sweating an ocean on the treadmill, the sun lounger may call you. Situated on the Lanai Deck, are multiple beach chairs and infinity pools designed for an escape in utter relaxation. However, if you’re looking for a deeper relaxation, the Organic Spa may be better suited. This is jam-packed with five saunas, multiple indoor and outside Jacuzzi’s and even two large sun decks for absorbing the sun rays.

Although I certainly enjoyed spending time in the Spa from a very early age, your children may not. If so, they may be more gratified by the Beach Club featuring a large indoor pool, pool-side bar, and even palm trees. Later on in the evening, this turns into an outdoor nightclub filled with DJ’s and laser shows! Or for more adventurous water activities, the Four Elements Deck may be more appropriate. This features multiple water-slides, mini-golf, the Lazy River, a high-ropes course, and even a 150-foot glass walk above sea level.

For those considering a Christmas cruise, during the winter season deck 16 turns into a full-scale ice skating rink. Thus meaning you can experience that winter Christmas feel, even when in the Caribbean! Upon reflection, what most stands out for me about AIDA cruises is the value for money. This may possibly be the best value for money cruise line I have ever come across.
