Holiday Times Are For Helping the Less Fortunate, Think Holiday Cards

0

Every year I watch as advertisers begin to promote their products for the Holiday Period. For retail this is their busiest time and sales usually make or break a company’s year. I’m not here to play scrooge, I would however like people to think a little about what the holidays are really about.

Perhaps it’s me getting a year older and wiser, but as I look around at the world it really makes me understand that our time on this earth isn’t a long one and that we should make the most of our time. The catastrophee of watching Katrina wipe out whole cities and families makes me realize that material things that we have are great, but not all that important. Think about all the people that saved to buy that great house in New Orleans, that today if alive are without anything. These people as hard as it is should realize, that as hard as it is, life goes on.

Children and families to me are what Holidays are all about. When I see children who have certain difficulties and obstacles work hard to achieve goals that others take for granted, it touches my heart. Children are pure. The Mackay Centre in Montreal helps children. The first school for the Deaf in Montreal was started in 1870. Around 1960, the Mackay Institute and the School for Crippled Children both needed a new building. The new “Mackay Centre” was opened in 1964 to serve both populations. Since that time the Mackay Centre has evolved into an organization in which two different organizations cooperate to meet the needs of deaf and disabled children. The Mackay Centre focuses on rehabilitation while the Mackay Centre School concerns itself with the educational needs of the children. There are many joint efforts in accomplishing these goals. At the the present time, the school has a population of 28 deaf children and 133 physically disabled / language students ranging in age from 4 years to 19 years. However, the majority of our students are between 4 and 12 years of age. Students come to the school from all corners of the city as well as from off island schools. There are an additional 28 children who are not disabled in the school, but who attend the school on our reverse integration program. These students are from the Montreal area.

There are 32 teachers in the school, 10 teachers of the deaf and 22 for the physically disabled and language students. All our teachers are trained in special education, and most have advanced degrees.

This truly is a remarkable school with dedicated professionals who truly help children make the most of their lives. I decided that as a fundraiser for this school I would help them sell Christmas and Holiday Cards that were drawn by the children. Proceeds from the cards would go back to the school to buy specific equipment to further help these great teachers, help the children. Being part of this experince truly has made me appreciate the holidays. This year especially with all the tragedies in the world, pick a worthwhile cause and contribute. A small contribution goes along way in many deserving under priviledged peoples lives. If you would like to know more about the Mackay Centre please visit their website at www.emsb.qc.ca/mackay/generalinformation.htm. To order their holiday cards you may call me at 514-337-2238 or visit my website for Solutions Ink at www.solutionsink4u.com. Thank you and have a heartfelt holiday season.

Quick and Easy Holiday Decorating

Holiday Shopping Experience

You’re tired. You’ve worked hard all week. Suddenly, the kids shout gleefully… “let’s decorate!” … in anticipation of the coming holiday. The “let’s not” is miraculously not permitted to escape your lips. Instead you take a deep breath while you wonder about how this decorating could become an easier and more fun-filled activity.

Well, it can be!

– First, insist on family members pitching in to help and treat this like a family project. This should not just rest on your shoulders to accomplish and it will be much more fun if you all are making changes and creating memories together.

– Next, pick a day and time you’ll all devote no more than one to two hours for a quick holiday makeover at your home (for a major decorating holiday schedule two or three longer blocks of time). It helps if you can set the decorating date about one to two weeks from now, if time still allows for that. This gives you time to gather items together for the project.

– Ask the kids to create one or two new arts and crafts decorations that are suitable to the holiday to have ready for the decorating day. Or, ask them to select ones from among any they may already have on hand, for instance, from school projects.

– Decide on 3 to 4 areas you will focus on decorating this year. Here are some choices: the front door, the front yard, the entry hallway, the kitchen table, the dining room table, the living room, the patio, the bathroom, the bedroom. There are other areas you could consider as well. But if you want quick and dirty, then focus in on only 3 to 4 of the areas for decorating this year. Anyway, you can select other areas next year for a change.

– Keep holiday decorations in separate bags, boxes or baskets in the same closet or in the attic so they’ll be easy for everyone to retrieve when they are needed next.

– Buy items you really love when you see them advertised or they may not be available when you later. It’s common for seasonal merchandise to change from year to year and also they are not stocked year-round typically. So, your item may no longer be available if you wait too long to decide you want it. Then stash your figurines, statues, wall hangings, and other holiday decorations in your bags or boxes, sorted by holiday.

– Make or buy some snacks or treats to enjoy together at the completion of your decorating time.

Here are some favorite quick and easy decorating areas and tips:

1. The front door- Have a welcome sign that is theme oriented and you can easily change by season or by holiday. You can either hang up a completely new themed sign, or there are some that come with interchangeable pieces you swap in and out representing different holidays or themes.

2. The dining room table or a table that is centrally located but not used that often- Change the table runner or the tablecloth to a holiday themed one. Then showcase your holiday decorations by arranging a combination of your kid’s holiday creations and your own figurines or other holiday decor on the table.

3. The mantel or entertainment center- Add a string of lights and if you wish, you can also vary the string of lights by color best suited for the coming holiday theme. Wall hangings can be changed around this area temporarily as well. Holiday accessories, flags, figurines, etc. are easy to rotate in and to view on or around this area of your home.

4. Special areas by kid’s choice- Smaller children can help by adding little decorations to windows and glass doors. They enjoy taping up their creations or they can easily put up static cling decorations. Other areas small children enjoy decorating include outdoors, the dog house and their own rooms. Allow them to handle this aspect of decorating while you take pleasure in their big smiles and hugs!

Finally, make your decorating time even more enjoyable by having holiday background music or other favorite tunes playing in the background. Then, when you’re done decorating, finish up with a big family hug and munching on tasty snack treats together!

Great Games for Your Halloween Party

0

If you’re having a Halloween party you need to play some games! Whether it’s to fill the time before the food is ready or to keep the kids occupied before their parents collect them, here are some ghoulish games to play.

1) Pin the Wart on the Witch’s Nose: Draw or photocopy up a big picture of a witch; get lumps of green play-dough, blindfold each child and let them put a green wart on the witch’s face.

2) Apple bobbing is the traditional Halloween game. Float apples in a bowl of water, each player must try to get an apple with their teeth while their hands are held behind their backs. (This can get messy)

3) Traditionally on Halloween night, if you peel an apple and throw the skin over your shoulder and it will form the initial of the person you are to marry. You could peel the child’s apple once bobbed and see if it resembles a letter.

4) Another variation is to hang the apples on string and the players have to eat the apple again without touching it. Problem: Unless you grow your own apples they rarely have stalks still attached. You could try this game with ring doughnuts, bagels or ring biscuits.

5) Musical Zombies: Find some suitable Halloween Music – Saint-Saens’ ‘Danse Macabre’ goes down well with children, but if the kids are a bit young you could use ‘Fossils’ from his ‘Carnival of the Animals’ – and play this version of musical statues. Instead of dancing the kids pretend to be zombies then stand still when the music stops.

6) Wrap the Mummy: tear up strips of an old sheet and see who can wrap up their friend the fastest.

7) Sleeping vampires: Quieten things down with this version of sleeping lions, they all have to lie silently in the crypt; the one who stays still the longest is the winner.

Have a Happy Halloween!

Christmas Gifts For Dolphin Lovers

0

Choosing a dolphin lover gift may not be as easy as it is for a pet lover, but that is not to say it is not possible. In fact, you will find quite a range of dolphin related gifts around the internet, although in your local store it may be hit and miss as to whether you will find anything. In my case, I received the true, ultimate dolphin lover gift, some years ago, but more of that later.

The demand for dolphin gifts, though, is undoubtedly high. On a brief and unscientific survey, dolphin lover gifts are about half as popular as cat lover gifts. If you think about it, that is amazing. Most people will never see a dolphin in their lives, yet we are surrounded by cats.

What is it, then, that makes dolphins so appealing? I love birds and cats especially, but dolphins I adore. They are wonderful and appealing creatures with a mystique that helps their popularity. Dolphins are the stuff of sailors’ tales, and true stories, about dolphins and man. They have faces that are expressive in a human like way, and they seem to smile. Dolphins also seem to follow man out at sea, when men venture out in their boats or into the water.

Dolphins are also performers, not just in captivity, but in the wild. While they do travel at high speed and jump out of the water in so doing, they do come across as playful, and capable of enjoying life. So, in a way they are partly human like, and therefore easy for us to relate to. They are also very intelligent.

Dolphins engender excitement, and at times everyone becomes a dolphin lover. In my country of origin, England, dolphins off the coast have always been something of a rarity; although I have read that large numbers of dolphins have been seen off nearby Wales recently. While I still lived in England, though, the appearance of a few dolphins close to shore may even have made the television news and front pages of the newspapers. Now, that’s something cat’s cannot do!

I am one of the lucky few, though. I was fortunate to be able to live on the Dorset coastline, where a group of about 6 dolphins had become familiar passers-by just offshore. Very rarely they ventured into Swanage Bay, but mostly they were observed sometimes off Durlston. But, you needed a lot of luck and patience to see any dolphins there, even when they were known to be in the area. I had a naturalist friend who had lived in Swanage for 25 years, and was a frequent visitor to Durslton; he had never, ever seen a dolphin there.

I was a member of Dolphin Watch, spending long hours on the cliff top looking out for the dolphins to record their movements. I had no luck ever while on duty, nor had many fellow dolphin lovers on the watch. My luck suddenly changed, though, when I was out walking with my daughter one Sunday afternoon, on the cliff tops at Durlston. It was early December, and winter and Christmas were in the air.

The grass slope was a little bit slippery, and I slipped over, ending up on my back. After my daughter’s initial concern subsided, we both had a good laugh, and I hobbled over to a nearby bench to get my breath back. The bench was looking out to sea. That’s when something of a miracle happened; well, at least a major coincidence; an incredible coincidence.

As we sat down, I said: “Ok, we will sit here until we see a dolphin, even though it may mean missing Christmas.” Christmas was 3 weeks away, so it was a rash thing to say. We looked out to sea, and within a minute, I saw two dolphins. I was in disbelief, but I took another look; I had my glasses on so was not being deceived. It really was dolphins.

My daughter thought, assumed, and was sure, I was joking. Then she saw them also, plus a third dolphin. We watched them for about 45 minutes, walking along the coast with them, and then back again. It was a mesmerising and unforgettable time, even though they were so far away; those three bottle-nosed dolphins were, to me, the ultimate dolphin lover’s Christmas gift. A few weeks early, and free, but a wonderful gift nonetheless.

The History of Teddy Bears

0
Teddy Bear

Teddy bears have been around since 1902. The teddy bear came to being when President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shot a black bear held captive by his hunting party. Also worth noting is that President Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot this captive bear became a very popular political cartoon by Cliff Barryman.

A Brooklyn shopkeeper was inspired by the cartoon. The shopkeeper then asked President Rosevelt his permission to name a toy bear “Teddy”. Thus became the creation of the teddy bear.

It is also worth noting that the teddy bear was born in Germany between 1902 and 1903.

The first teddy bears did not have cuddly faces or smiles, in fact, the first teddy bears had expressions which could best be described as stoic. Teddy bears were also quite stiff, the bendable arms and legs and soft, plush bodies came much later.

Now teddy bears are still the number one item to give babies as their first toy, the prize to win your girl on your first date, and most importantly, the toy of choice for law enforcement to give to children in sad, unsafe situations to help them calm down and feel safe.

The market for collectible teddy bears has seen significant growth in the last several years. A collectible teddy bear is very different than the typical store bought teddy that you might give a child. The industry defines collectible teddy bears as hard, not floppy, and fully jointed (meaning arms, legs, and head are moveable). The artists however, also determine collectibles. Steiff teddy bears and others have a very high collectible value.

Vacation Home Exchange V Renting – Trade and Save, or Do You?

Vacation Home Exchange V Renting Trade and save, or do you ?

Ever thought of trading your home with another family for a few weeks instead of renting a Vacation Home?. Lets look at the differences and see if it’s an option you might consider.

Renting a vacation property is easy enough, pay a rent for as many weeks as you need. Rent direct with the owner or via the thousands of rental agents, or via a travel agent.

The choice is pretty vast and often you can select properties from a book or brochure, there are sizes and prices to suit everyone. Many allow pets and come fully fitted out.

Bigger properties housing 7-12 or more offer a low cost break as you pay for the property, rather than per person, as you would in a hotel. Downside is you get to do all the work, although some rentals can come with housekeeping or maid duties.

The attraction of renting is usually one of cost and choice, and works best in your own country. Renting abroad involves a high travel cost (per person) and unlike a package tour you are often down to organising and paying for travel from airport to the property. There is usually someone on hand to see you in, the owner or their agent, and most properties provide a good break.

Risky sometimes to book direct with foreign owners, large agencies vet both the properties and the owners and although perhaps more costly give better piece of mind. Paying $1,000 and arriving at a run down hut may not be the sort of vacation you seek.

Home swapping offers 2 choices, first to trade a few weeks or longer with another persons normal home. Or trade a period in a second vacation home or time share they, or you own.

The attraction is obvious in that no rental monies change hands and this gets better the longer the stay is. Older, retired folk often look for 3-6 month trades which clearly would be too costly on a rental basis, but a workable option for 2 retired families to trade homes for a long period.

Again a DIY vacation, unless maids are on hand. Number of choices are less, so to succeed you need to be open minded rather than have fixed dates, locations and types of properties in mind. Most experienced swappers seek good clean accommodation in the area they wish to visit. You get to know the owners before agreeing the swap before you go. You rarely build friendships with rental owners you usually do with home swappers.

A home trade often comes with an auto thrown in, so this is a big plus if you can arrange pick up at the airport and makes a big difference in local travel during your stay. Do check insurance cover though and make sure you agree miles and damage costs.

With the advent of the electronic age many home swap offers are viewable on Internet web sites so you can review property (and owners) details, get to know the area through web site links and then open up discussions with potential trade partners. using E-mail the world is just a few seconds away.

More complex to organise than a rental, it can be both an exciting family interest or a drudge, which can put you off the concept. Worries and concerns about having someone else in your home and loads of “what if” questions can again excite you or deter you.

One of the best routes is a Tutorial on the subject which is freely available at the Homes Seekers web site with advice from some of the leading home exchange experts .

In summary – renting is easy, choose your property, book, pay and go – there is a big choice. Home swapping is a way of life, you get more involved and the money saving is not in practice the reason for most people trading homes. The desire to make new friends and contacts, see new places, new countries, learn the language and so on takes over. Home swapping does not suit everyone but it does offer an alterative and to many an ideal way of taking vacations – for many the only way they would go.

If you want to save a few hundred if not thousands of dollars on a Vacation break take a serious look at vacation home exchanging as a useful alternative to traditional house rental breaks.

Camping: Beginner’s Guide to Your First Tent Holiday

0
Wilderness Camping

I grew up there and it seems to me a very natural and simple kind of holiday, but camping, and therefore a holiday in a tent, for those who have never done it can seem more complicated than it is.

A holiday of this kind requires organization, equipment and also a great desire to adapt, but in general, if you overcome the first obstacle, you realize that a camping gives everyone something different, especially children. Cooking kits for camping also need to be prepared.

Giving up comfort, comfortable beds, private bathrooms (the biggest rock especially for women), television and video games often puts people in mind not to treat themselves to a holiday, but to a moment of stress. Nothing could be more wrong.

Only by doing a little research and buying the right equipment, which will then be ready for your next holiday, you will enjoy fantastic holidays in contact with nature.

But I won’t go any further, as I have already explained to you why you should choose a camping holiday. Now we’re going to put together a camping guide for the inexperienced, which we’re going to go into in more detail with a precise analysis of the equipment…piece by piece starting from the choice of the tent.

Camping Guide for the inexperienced

How to choose the campsite?

Unless you opt for free camping and if you are inexperienced I strongly advise against it, choosing a campsite requires the same questions you usually ask yourself when choosing a hotel considering budget and personal and family needs.

Where?

On the internet, but also at newsstands and in bookshops you can find long lists of elaborate campsites divided by regions, nations and so on.

One of the most complete is certainly that of Acsi which is published, but it is also readable on the internet. The society is German and it is not surprising given the unconditional love for this type of holiday of the Germans.

Beyond the Acsi you can consider other sources such as the inevitable Tripadvisor or Zoover review service to be taken with the springs given the rather showy presence of false reviews.

Camping by the sea

A first distinction between campsites to choose from is always between sea or mountain campsites.

If you are a novice, camping by the sea is much simpler for sure. At the sea you will have fewer problems related to the climate, but beyond this generally sea campsites have much more space and more services.

In addition, for those who want the atmosphere of the campsite, but hates tents, they also have bungalow caravans and so on … but I recommend you to venture for once.

To choose a campsite by the sea rather than another, you have to start from what kind of holiday you are looking for: some campsites look like real holiday villages, while others are extremely spartan and propose the true philosophy of camping.

Always consider some parameters:

  1. There is direct access to the sea. Not only for comfort, but also for beauty, direct access requires proximity to the beach and perhaps it can be pleasant to listen to the sound of the sea at night in your tent.
  2. Is there a market inside? For long stays or holidays with children it may be essential to have a market or a kiosk inside for sudden needs. Alternatively, always check the distance from the first outdoor market.
  3. Is it well connected by public transport? If you are in a car you might not be interested, but if you are travelling around Europe camping is something to consider.
  4. Methods of payment. It is not a superficial element if you consider that you are now going around with little cash and paying by card is essential.
  5. Toilet facilities on offer. This is an important element, but little specified on internet tables or guides. For this reason it is better to consider the time for a look and escape on the day of arrival. You have to consider the number of blocks per campsite size, the number of hot showers and especially how much they cost.
  6. Size of pitches. By now we tend to keep space to a minimum and if you arrive with an igloo for a few days you risk being thrown into areas not used for camping, near the toilets or on the famous dunes between the campsite and the beach.

Mountain camping

Mountain campsites are generally smaller than sea campsites, but it is true that they are certainly less crowded.

Be careful where they propose you to pitch your tent: you can often end up in steep stretches where bigger caravans and tents can’t stay, but sleeping with strange slopes is quite difficult.

Bathrooms work the same way as for sea campsites, but it is better to check that the showers have closed and not open doors above and below. This is because in the evening the temperature can drop considerably and a draught shower can be unpleasant.

It is also good to check if there is a bar or a very comfortable common area if you are in a tent and in case of bad weather you risk to stay closed there for a long time.

A piece of advice that you should never arrive too late at a campsite: you need time to find out if it’s right for you and eventually change destination and you also need time to set up your tent and set up your equipment.

The Challenges of Getting Overseas on a Student Budget

0

As a young adult, saving up money to travel is hard enough, but what other challenges will you face when booking your next adventure? Rachel Haynes investigates.

Peta, STA Travel: This year its just been a pretty shocking year, I think. Prices have increased like noticeably compared to say travelling last year.

Rachel Haynes: As prices soar, Peta from STA travel is speaking to more and more students who are struggling to get overseas.

Peta, STA Travel: It’s mostly for expenses before you leave Australia, so a lot of the expenses overseas are still the same, it’s just the flights and, like the pre-booking stuff that you need to get done thats actually increased a bit.

Rachel Haynes: Student and avid traveller, Nina Harriott, is all too familiar with these problems…

Nina Harriott: Particularly just getting overseas is a massive hurdle. I went to Europe three months ago and it was a real struggle saving up, plane flights, and insurance and accommodation, it all adds up really quickly. And it’s just really difficult for uni students particularly, who are trying to do their studies, and do paid work and often internships and things, it’s really hard to find the money. I think it’s really important that students and young people especially just get out and see the world and it would be a massive shame if financial struggles and difficulties in budgeting just get in the way of some of those amazing experiences.

How Do You Choose Your Life’s Purpose?

0

What’s my life’s purpose? This question has been on everyone’s mind at some point in time. As kids, we often got asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” And just like we did not have a definite answer when we were kids, most of us still don’t know what our life’s purpose is. Growing up, a lot of us chose to become doctors, lawyers, pharmacists etc. but fast-forward to 20+ years into the future (now) and you will find us stuck at dead-end jobs that have nothing to do with what we set out to become. Does that mean we failed to fulfill our life’s purpose?

LIFE’S PURPOSE VS CAREER

Before we go ahead, your life’s purpose and your career can be intertwined but they are not the same thing. While your career choice can change, your life’s purpose almost never changes. For instance, if you set out to become a pharmacist, you did that because you wanted to help others. So, helping others is your life’s purpose but the means to fulfilling this is your career and that can change at any point in time.

THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGING

The toughest part of changing your line of work is deciding whether it is the best decision for you? Are you choosing that career path because it’s easy? Are you choosing it because everyone else is doing it? Truth is, we can dance around these questions a lot of ways but the best answer we’ve come up with is, “Go with your heart.” If you feel like being an accountant today, then go with it. But remember this: once you find something else you want to do, be courageous enough to change.

TO BE GREAT OR NOT TO BE

Once you have decided on your life’s purpose, there are several ways you can fulfill it. Everyone wants to do something great. What we fail to realize is that you must be great at whatever you do. There are people making YouTube videos that reach millions of people and making an impact all over the world. This just goes to show you that you don’t have to be the next President Obama or Mark Zuckerberg to make an impact in the world.

Whatever you decide to do, do it because you love it and it’s in-line with your life’s purpose. And don’t forget to do the little things in a great way.

What are the Benefits of Over 80 Travel Insurance?

0

As the name suggests, over 80 travel insurance is chiefly meant for such people who are above 80 years of age. It is an insurance that covers certain things during travelling of the elderly people. It is because people in old age are at high risk of experiencing certain health issues or even other problems during travelling. At the same time, it is also true that old people also wish to fulfil their desire of travelling abroad or even at domestic level to meet some old friends or have a glimpse of some of the most admirable places in the world. That is why large numbers of travel insurance companies make available over 80 travel insurance so that even elderly may enjoy their trips without any stress or tension. There are multiple benefits that are offered by over 80 travel insurance. Read below the same.

Insurance cover for multiple health issues- It is one of the foremost benefit of any over 80 travel insurance policy. Since most elder people suffer from certain health problems therefore they need to get the same covered under travel insurance policy. It is because they can get reimbursement for the same from the insurance company in case they have to undergo treatment at the foreign land. Hence they can save lots of money which is otherwise spent in paying up medical bills only. Under this policy, pre-existing as well as unexpected health issues may be covered.

Insurance of the travelling companions- It is an evident fact that elderly are also like children and need special care and attention. It is particularly true while travelling. The over 80 travel insurance policy understands this need well and hence offers the option of insurance cover for the travelling companions or the caretakers of the old people. It implies the travelling companions of the elderly will also be covered under same policy and can get all the benefits.

Insurance cover for baggage and passport- The over 80 travel insurance is beneficial in yet another good way. Undeniably, memory of most elderly people becomes weak with advancement in age. Hence there is always risk of losing their belongings such as baggage, passport or other important things or documents. All such things can also be covered under over 80 travel insurance policy. It implies the concerned insurance company becomes completely liable to search or compensate for the loss incurred by the elderly.

Reimbursement against cancellation or delay in the trip- Due to some unexpected or inevitable conditions or situations, sometimes the travellers may need to cancel their trip. This in turn results in loss of money as they can get money back for the flight only after making huge reductions. Such a loss can be prevented by getting covered under cancellation policy. Also problems may arise due to delay in flight for certain reasons such as mechanical/technical issues in the aircraft or weather conditions etc. In this case, the travel insurance company is liable to make all arrangements for short stay as well as meals of the travellers.

To conclude there are multiple benefits of over 80 travel insurance policy. Hence elderly are advised to opt for the same before their trip.
