What’s my life’s purpose? This question has been on everyone’s mind at some point in time. As kids, we often got asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” And just like we did not have a definite answer when we were kids, most of us still don’t know what our life’s purpose is. Growing up, a lot of us chose to become doctors, lawyers, pharmacists etc. but fast-forward to 20+ years into the future (now) and you will find us stuck at dead-end jobs that have nothing to do with what we set out to become. Does that mean we failed to fulfill our life’s purpose?
LIFE’S PURPOSE VS CAREER
Before we go ahead, your life’s purpose and your career can be intertwined but they are not the same thing. While your career choice can change, your life’s purpose almost never changes. For instance, if you set out to become a pharmacist, you did that because you wanted to help others. So, helping others is your life’s purpose but the means to fulfilling this is your career and that can change at any point in time.
THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGING
The toughest part of changing your line of work is deciding whether it is the best decision for you? Are you choosing that career path because it’s easy? Are you choosing it because everyone else is doing it? Truth is, we can dance around these questions a lot of ways but the best answer we’ve come up with is, “Go with your heart.” If you feel like being an accountant today, then go with it. But remember this: once you find something else you want to do, be courageous enough to change.
TO BE GREAT OR NOT TO BE
Once you have decided on your life’s purpose, there are several ways you can fulfill it. Everyone wants to do something great. What we fail to realize is that you must be great at whatever you do. There are people making YouTube videos that reach millions of people and making an impact all over the world. This just goes to show you that you don’t have to be the next President Obama or Mark Zuckerberg to make an impact in the world.
Whatever you decide to do, do it because you love it and it’s in-line with your life’s purpose. And don’t forget to do the little things in a great way.
