Bro's Penny Saver
“We’re quiet, but everyone who knows fresh seafood knows where we’re at.” Peggy Bro, owner
This establishment on Moss Street has been around for many decades as a meat market, but when Peggy Bro bought it eight years ago, it grew into a well-stocked seafood counter, and a place to get tasty plate lunches. The plate lunches consist of seafood plates, shrimp pasta, stews, etouffées and red beans and rice. Ms. Peggy recently found a recipe for shrimp with white beans while visiting in Delcambre, and is preserving it by preparing it for her customers. It’s her way of keeping culture alive, especially from a town so heavily battered by Hurricane Rita in 2005. While there, most hungry customers get a “half wiener” which consists of a hot dog split down the middle with chili heaped on it. It is a tasty snack for the bargain price of $.75.
The seafood counter offers the best of the Gulf South’s waters. Most everything comes in fresh daily or every other day. Many kinds of shrimp, oysters, crab, turtle meat, frog’s legs, and numerous fish are available for purchase for you to prepare at home. This is a great resource for seafood lovers who like to cook at home--many of these delicacies are hard to track down in other markets.
